Who Are We?

Hi there! We are a group of young investigators in Singapore which consists of 4 members who are Chen Xia, Hui Tene, Rosaling & Ke Yan from Secondary 2E of Pei Cai Secondary School. And it's a pleasure to meet ya! Hope you can learn more things when surfing in our blog :D

The Objectives

-To find out why Singaporeans are not giving birth to more children.
-Enlighten curious people
  • Why Singaporeans have low birth rate?
  • Consequences if Singapore continues to have such a low birth rate
  • Ways to increase Singapore's low birth rate
Let us show you the results of our research & survey!

The Level Of Our Knowledge

At first we didn't care about how serious Singapore's low birth rate is, after our boss, Ms Mok, told us about it. We did a research on our own & here is what we know.

  • In Singapore, more people are engaging later due to women's high qualifications such as expanding their careers, looking for their soul mates etc. Therefore, they tend to take a longer time to settle down and plan their family. Most of the women cannot become pregnant after they reach the age of 50. And those who delay conceiving babies are given less chance to conceive babies.
                                                                               -Hui Tene

  • I think Singapore have low birth rate because that most of the Singaporeans didn't want to give birth as they feel they will become fat after giving birth. Most of the females feel that after they had given birth, they will contract melancholia.
                                                           -Chen Xia

  • Singapore's low birth rate is because of our social & economic policies of the most of the past decades, which has resulted in high cost of living, low security of deployment, low wages, wide disparity of income, high cost of housing, a stressed education system and so on...
-Rosaling
  • Singapore need more people to work. So they will not have time to conceive and raise up babies. As the world advances, they feel that work is more important than concieving babies.

How Did We Carry Out Our Operation?

We, the young investigators of Singapore, went to Bishan MRT station to survey people ranging from 20 to 50 years old. We asked them some survey questions & jot down their feedbacks.
So here are the following questions we asked.

  1. How many children do you have?
  2. How many children do you wan to have?
  3. What is stopping you from having 1 or more children?
  4. Why do you think Singapore's birth rate is low?
  5. What makes you want to have children?
  6. Why do you think the government is so concern about Singapore having low birth rate?
  7. What do you think the government can do to encourage people in Singapore to give to more children?

And The Result Is...

In the end, most of the results are the same. We have interviewed 4 people who haven't given birth and 6 people who have given birth.
Most of the people who hadn't given birth confessed that it is expensive raising up more than 1 child and work is stopping them from giving birth. The thought of  giving birth gives the pressure as they thought of the responsibilities and the price of raising the child etc. One of the people that we have interviewed, told us that it was due to space constrain & money. Recently, she had given birth to one child and she cost of the baby's essential items cost almost up to $1000. Nowadays Singaporeans are more highly educated and mostly care about their appearances, work, money and they complained that they had no time to take care of their babies.
They want to have children is because it makes the family more complete and lively and they can play with the baby. Also, they want their adorable children to take care of them when they grow old.
If Singapore continues to have a low birth rate, there will be more elderly than youngsters. As a result, no young people can take care of the elderly thus technology can't advance. The government don’t want to make the people pay more taxes. And people is the only natural resources in our country. Not only will we have less local if our country population will shrink. In the end, government need to rely more on the foreigners.
The only thing they wish the government could give is MONEY ($), MORE HOLIDAYS(Up to 1 month), subsidy for child care centre and priority for housing for big families so that they can take good care of their wife during the holidays.

What Could We Have Improve On?

Hui Tene
I feel that we can do better if our group members could contribute more by giving more creative and modern ideas, be more confident next time when doing survey on other people.
Chen Xia
I feel that we should discuss together more for the information,we also can go and search for more details about low birth rate so that we can do better for our blog and we can present well.
Rosaling
I feel that we should ask people more questions so that we can understand more about the low birth rate. ;D
Ke Yan
I feel that we should do more research about other countries' birth rate and what the governement can do to improve Singapore's population besides attracting foreigners.

Our Feelings ♥
